I have spent the past 48 years working and searching through the fields of psychology, philosophy and religion. The essence of my pursuit has been and continues to be to find and experience ultimate truth, the uncreated creator, the mover unmoved, or God.
I believe for the briefest of moments I have experienced that end. But, it is no end; that is, a land of milk and honey to be enjoyed in perpetuity. It has been almost like a dream ending the moment you attempt to control the action, or a sub-atomic particle changing character (wave/particle) when you attempt to measure it. That is, the second I recognize it and attempt to perpetuate it, it seems to vanish.
To me, God is ineffable. It is beyond words. Any attempt to describe God always falls short. That is because words only approximate reality. Words can only constitute a map that describes a territory. And as the father of General Semantics, Alfred Korzybski, famously declared, ‘the map is not the territory.’
My best effort to describe the God experience is to liken God to a higher and indescribable intelligence and/or energy, and/or grace; all of which transcend any other, and lower, intelligence or energy or ambiance thus far accurately described and understood by humankind. God is not of time or space or any other known or postulated dimension of the universe.
My God experience moments inform me that God is all at once. In God, there is no discriminating any of us from any other one, or all, of us. In God, there are no secrets; virtually all knowledge – past, present, and future – is available. In God, anything is available and anything is possible. Despite one’s most sincere efforts, however, none of it can be owned by anyone. That is because to experience God, one must transcend the sense of self, including its obsession and identification with the things it believes define it. To meet God one must move over and make room for God. And by now in this paragraph I am recognizing my inability to find the words to describe what I have seen and experienced.
Perhaps, the most accurate description of God requires the use of via negativa logic which holds that the only accurate path to truth is through elimination of the lies surrounding it. Using this technique I can narrow down my entire life’s search and philosophy to two words:
God is.
